Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT)

Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT)

Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is a type of prenatal screening test that assesses the risk of certain chromosomal abnormalities and genetic conditions in the developing fetus with a higher degree of accuracy. This test is a simple blood test performed during the first trimester of pregnancy.

NIPT can screen for:

  • Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome): This is a genetic disorder caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21, leading to developmental and intellectual challenges.
  • Trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome): Another chromosomal disorder, which results in severe developmental delays and organ abnormalities.
  • Trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome): A rare genetic condition causing various birth defects and intellectual disabilities.
  • Sex chromosome abnormalities and determine the baby’s sex early in pregnancy.
