Family Planning & Birth Control

Family Planning

Family planning is an important event that allows individuals
and couples to make well-informed choices regarding the
timing and number of children they desire. With diverse
contraception options, educational resources and healthcare
assistance, family planning is more accessible to families now
more than ever.

Contraception Options

  • Birth Control Pills
This is a pill that is taken daily, which contains hormone progestogen that thickens the cervical mucus to make sperm transport more difficult. It also thins the womb’s lining so that implantation does not take place. Less than one woman in 100 will get pregnant over one year.

  • Intrauterine Contraceptive Devices (IUCD)
This method uses a device the size of a 50-cent coin which is inserted into the womb. The device contains no hormones, and is made of plastic surrounded by a small amount of copper. The copper prevents sperm from reaching the egg and the device changes the womb lining so that implantation does not take place. The chance of getting pregnant while using this method is less than 1% per year. (Souce: Healthhub SG)

  • Subdermal Implants
A rod the size of a matchstick is inserted under the skin of the upper forearm. The progesterone hormone is slowly released and this prevents ovulation, thickens up the mucous at the cervix and thins out the lining of the womb. The chance of getting pregnant while using this method is less than 1 in 1000 over three years. (Souce: National Institutes of Health)
